Crackers?

“There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”
— Somerset Maugham

When I think about what I need to do in order to get in the right frame of mind for writing, I realize that the parameters change day to day. When I am in my own home (in Vancouver, Winnipeg or in Ontario) I have my usual space I like to inhabit for writing – mainly due to the physical aspects. A desk, good lighting, and maybe a fridge with cold beverages close by. Or hot tea on some winter days.

Then I think about where else I like to write: libraries, coffee shops, airport waiting areas, and even on airplanes themselves. The fact is, for me the only criteria is the ability to see the computer screen and comfortably type. I’ve never tried the beach, or for that matter any outdoor space. The bright sun would kill the screen image, and I’m not a tech guru but I’m willing to bet sand and dirt aren’t the best thing to introduce to your keyboard.

It is only lately that I have discovered the one key element that sets the tone. It isn’t a comfortable chair, or a desk at the perfect height for typing. It’s crackers.

CRACKERS. Plain tops (salt isn’t good for my high blood pressure) and definitely nothing to put on them. Just plain crackers.

Once I have my sleeve of crackers beside me, I start to type. I refuse to admit just how many sleeves I go through in a marathon writing session, but once the crackers run out I simply stop writing. It’s these stupid little crackers that keep me going!

I’ve not tried it (yet!) but I have the distinct impression that the box they come in would be just as flavorful, and possibly more nutritious. Definitely more fiber content. Come to think of it, the box even looks better than the crackers themselves. It is the crackers themselves, however, that have become my inspiration triggers. God only knows why.

I wonder: What are the triggers that other writers have that make them settle down to write?
